The Twenty-ninth United States Colored Troop Co. B is a re-enactment unit formed in 1993 by its faithful members, LeRoy Martin and Victory Young.  These men saw the need to educate and preserve the memory of the soldiers of the American Civil War (1863-1865).  Members of the unit participate in battle re-enactments, visit schools and participate in public events as fully equipped and trained re-enactors of the period.

What we Believe

As stated before we, the USCT 29th, strive to represent the brave men who served in the United States Colored Troops, therefore historical accuracy, attention to detail and respect for the men of USCT are all established goals of the company.  These goals are what we consider to be our unsung commitments. Commitments that ensure that every member:

Helps the public to understand and appreciate the contributions of the African American soldiers during the civil war.

Provide a positive role model for our young people

Gain and maintain credibility and respect in the reenactment community.

When the “war” is over for us, whether after a school program or a hard fought reenactment, we go home to a nice hot shower, good food, a warm bed and loved ones. Many of the men of the USCT never got that chance. Many rest still in shallow graves along the line of battle. It is to them that we dedicate our efforts.

Feeling Called to Re-enact

Your participation in the unit is vital to carrying on this proud tradition. Once again we the USCT 29th Co. B pride ourselves in authenticity therefore the only criteria we ask is for each future member to invest in, purchase, and maintain their uniform/equipment. There are items mandatory and others that are optional. We send out manuals that describe the various clothing, arms, accouterments, and equipment used by the 29th USCT reenactors.

If the above goals regarding historical accuracy seem impertinent, please understand they are developed in effort to honor men whose contributions and self sacrifice won us freedom. These men were truly the first to seek our civil rights. For them no sacrifice was too great. “Those who would be free must strike the blow. Better to die free then to as a slave.” --Fredrick Douglass
